One month down and 11 more to go; time flies when you’re having fun.
January was a busy month with a trip to Toronto for Ontario Forum 2009 and the EnerQuality Awards. It was my first time attending the event and the two days were filled with interesting sessions, great networking and a chance to connect with clients from across the province. A few members from the local associations we are members of one awards such as Urbandale in Ottawa, Mountainview Homes and Mason Homes in Niagara.
Next up was the Ontario Wood Truss Fabricators (OWFTA) AGM in Mississauga where I attended with a special invitation from Mike Phillips the Executive Director. Mike started doing some guest columns with our Ontario paper last year and this event allowed us a chance to meet face to face and learn about the OWTFA. 2009 is shaping up to be a great year for the association with the roll out of their Quality Certified program with the first companies taking part in independent third party audit this Fall. This move by OWFTA shows their commitment to producing quality products for today’s building environment and especially for the Green Building movement.
Of all the events that I did attend in January the most enjoyable for me was the Barrie Construction Associations (BCA) AGM where I was successfully nominated and elected to the Board of Directors for 2009 and 2010. One of the things I challenged myself to last year was becoming more active in the associations we are members of. This challenge has lead to several committees I am involved with the Niagara Construction Association and now as a director for the BCA. A challenge has been made to all Account Managers in the company to also become active in the local associations at the very least on a committee. This level of interaction will allow us all to build relationships and offer a lot more support to the associations without expecting anything in return, however the sentiment of “The more you give, the more you get back” is very true.
For the March issue I am looking forward to cover off my first Board of Directors meeting with the BCA and what new challenges an opportunities will be given to me. The key to your involvement with any association you are a member of is to take advantage of monthly meetings and events to allow you to network and meet people. If you join an association thinking the work and referrals will come you are mistaken, you only get out what you put in.
